Formal Proposal

FORMAL PROPOSAL
TOPIC
The topic of our documentary is ‘Take outs’ where we will explore what the favourite take out, and least favourite take out is to our target audience. We will also explore matters such as whether home cooked food or take out is preferred, what makes people love take outs, how much the target audience are willing to spend on our take out, and other things that could relate to this. Another key theme that could be explored in our documentary on take outs could be the decline of take outs as all of these healthy eating campaigns are coming in ever since we realised the dangers of all of the grease in fatty foods. This will lead us to ask the question, are take outs really worth the risk to our health, just for a quick eat or little treat? Many people are trying to demolish take outs because of the health risk thanks to role models in society such as Jamie Oliver, so we can see how people like him influence our views of take outs.

TYPE OF DOCUMENTARY
Our documentary will be a mixed documentary, as we will have interviews used with our target audience, and vox pops will also be used to see the what the thoughts of the general audience are on matters such as what the most popular take out is. Cut aways will also be used in order to relate what we are saying to the documentary when we have nothing else to show, this will be shown over the narration.

STYLE OF DOCUMENTARY
Our documentary will not be biased, as we will just be giving factual information on take outs, and the opinion of the public and such things. This documentary will not be emotional considering it is based on take outs, so the only way we could make this emotional is by finding out how many people in a year pass away because of how much grease goes into their bodies from their take outs. We could research statistics on how many people suffer and have to go into hospital due to their fat intake from their take outs which could turn this into a relatively emotional documentary.

CHANNEL AND SCHEDULING
Our documentary will be shown on channel 4, as this was one of the most popular choices of channel to watch a documentary on according to the people that did our questionnaire, this channel also matches up to the theme and audience of our documentary, so it is suitable. The documentary will be shown around eight o’clock as this is prime viewing time for most of our target audience, as they sit around their television eating their dinner around this time, so a documentary on food would be perfect during this time.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Our target audience is a family audience, as we want our documentary to get as many views as possible. The documentary will be slightly educational and will help the audience to gain a higher insight into the world of take outs, who founded them, when the first take out was created, and where it was created and such things. This documentary could be for families considering they need to be the ones to know about the danger of take outs, in order to help the next generation. However, it is up to the parents of the children, whether they get take outs or not just for a quick meal instead of cooking and making a mess of the kitchen. It will be based around the parents mainly to give them a bit more of an insight on the dangers of take outs, the positives and negatives of take outs and opinions of other people. However, this documentary is also for the children and teenage audience so that they can learn about the risk they are putting themselves at by simply eating a few take outs in a month.

PRIMARY RESEARCH NEEDED
The research that will be needed for our documentary in order for it to be successful are, bits of research on what type of music will be needed in order to make our documentary successful, and who we should interview, what font and colour should be used, and other things such as this. In order to find out we will hand out 30 questionnaires to different people around college so we can find out what people our age find interesting in a documentary as they will be the most difficult people to engage in our documentary. We also did a couple of interviews with people around or college, to see what they thought for a few certain questions such as what is their least favourite and favourite take outs.

SECONDARY RESEARCH NEEDED
The secondary research that we will conduct in order to make our documentary successful is basically the general public’s opinion on what they think about their take out, their favourite and least favourite, what they order, how much they spend and other things along those lines. We will also research where the first take out came from, who was the founder of it, when it was created and what they served – questions such as these. We will look for general facts on take outs such as statistics on how many people eat take outs in a year, and how much they spend on them.

NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
The structure of our documentary linear considering there will be a beginning, a middle where we view the argument and an end:
  • The beginning of our documentary will include an introduction to take outs, we will look at many of the different take outs that are in the UK, and use statistics such as how many people in the UK eat take outs every weekend, and when they eat their take outs
  • During the middle of our documentary we will look at the arguments that could be evident in for our theme of take outs, this could be healthy eating over unhealthy take outs, or how take outs are dying out considering many people are suffering from health problems now due to all of their fat intake. We can look at how both of these issues can be disastrous for the take out industry, and how home cooked food could possibly become more popular in comparison to take outs.
  • The ending of our documentary will be left unbiased, so the audience can make up their own mind about take outs, what is better between take outs and home cooked food, also, we look into whether the health issues that come from take outs are down to the individual, or the actual take out.

OUTLINE OF CONTENT
  • Vox pops used in order to see what the general public think of take outs, where they eat, favourite and least favourite ect
  • Cut aways in order to have something going on on the screen while narration is going on in the background
  • Narration will be used to give the audience more of an insight into take outs and educate them a bit further
  • Interviews will be used to get certain individuals to explain their views on take outs, and then further elaborate on why they think this
  • Non digetic music will be used e.g. Franz Ferdinand - Take me out, to relate to the documentary and introduce the theme of the documentary
  • The theme of the documentary will be take outs, so we will get a lot of shots of take outs around wherever we film
  • We will interview chefs to ask questions such as 'When is peak time for your take out?'
  • We will also interview college students, as they are more likely to buy take outs than most people on their short free periods in college
  • We will look into deals such as Dominoes two for tuesdays
  • We will the public things such as 'How many take aways can you list?'
RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS
We will need to use resources such as take outs, in order to create a few cut aways for while the narration is occurring, so the narration and take outs relate to the documentary so it makes more sense to the audience. We will also need a narrator for our documentary so the audience focus on what is being said, and get a slightly larger insight into take outs. Another thing that will be used in our documentary is interviews, so we will get other peoples opinions on take outs when it comes to things such as whether take outs are really worth the health risk, what they think of take outs, and where the best take out is. Vox pops will also be used in order to get the opinion of the general public in order to possibly influence the view of the audience on take outs and other issues that will be introduced during our documentary.
