Documentary Analysis - Beyond the Glory

Type of Documentary
The type of documentary is mixed, it uses a mix of archived material and interviews

Themes
The themes reflect around the life of the boxer Mike Tyson and it talks about his life inside and outside of the ring, it talks about the negative effects of his life.

Narrative Structure
At the beginning of the documentary we are introduced to the boxer and it talks about his defeat in a match, it then goes on to talk about the knock on effect of the loss and the life Mike has had afterwards, he portrays his life as negative, the audience is given conflict as there are other interviews talking about Mike postively using words such as humble. In the middle of the documentary we are given archived footage from Mikes younger years, it shows conflict as it talks about Mike not boxing due to the death of a family member, it talks about the postive effects of being back in the ring, different from the beginning talking about his loss. The ending of the documentary ends in conflict as it talks about Mike ending up in prison and has his side of the story, it talks about his life falling about due to the accident.

Camerawork
Uses of establishing shots before fights showing where the match is, there are close ups for the interviewees, there is a use an extreme close up while Mike speaks to signal that he is the subject or the most important factor in the documentary. It uses a reconstruction which is a mid shot to show the area which is a prison but it also shows the switch from the rich lifestyle to being in prison with nothing.

Mise-en-scene
All interviews are shot within the interviewees personal space for example their own home in order to get the best response from the interviewee.

Sound
The sound used during the documentary creates an emotion for the audience while Mike and the narrator talk about the negative effects of his life, this makes the audience become driven into the narrative.

Editing
The editing uses long takes and only focuses on one character but uses interviews from other people reflecting on the subject. Clips are shown throughout showing the work needed to prep up before a match, it portrays Mike as postive as some of the clips show him at his own home with his girlfriend, this shows him as a calm person which contradicts the statement of him being called an 'animal'. There are a use of long take throughout the documentary while there a voiceover played during the clips.

Archived Material
Archived material used are relevant to the subject, it uses footage from previous fights, they relate to the subject and relate to what the narrator or the interviewee is talking about such as clips from Tysons home whole he speaks over the clip.

Graphics
Graphics used are simple white font so that the audience is not distracted from the narrative, The opening sequence uses font to singal the lighting effect of a boxing ring, it also has a graphic of gloves to refelct around the subject of boxing.
